Today we will review the MK1 Sturm Ruger Model Pistol.

L'arma vera - The real weapon

Era il 1949, quando i lettori dell'American Rifleam, osservando la pubblicità di una nuova pistola, si chiesero se l'autorevole periodico non avesse commesso un errore tipografico: a colpo d'occhio, la sagoma era quella di una Luger, ma era presentata come una .22 del tutto innovativa, creata da una nuova compagnia: la Sturm, Ruger & Co. Inc., di Southport, nel Connecticut.
La nuova arma era realmente straordinaria: pure riprendendo le più recenti tecniche di produzione, con il castello costituito da due stampate d'acciaio saldate elettricamente, manteneva un aspetto "d'epoca". L'otturatore, scorreva all'interno di un apposito tunnel nella parte superiore del castello, rendendo l'arma piú compatta e stabile al momento dello sparo, e mantenendo stabili le mire.
C'è poco da dire: nel 1977 dagli stabilimenti Ruger usciva il milionesimo esemplare della Standard Pistol, e ancora oggi la produzione continua con successo.
La Ruger .22 è una fra le armi da tiro e divertimento più diffuse negli States, e nel tempo è stata accompagnata da una serie crescente di armi per uso civile o di polizia, sempre apprezzate per l'alta qualità e le soluzioni innovative. La semplicità ed affidabilità di questa pistola ideata da Bill Ruger e Alex Sturm l'ha poi resa compagna ufficiosa di molti soldati statunitensi, anche se il piccolo calibro tende a renderla un'arma per gli "specialisti".
Attualmente la Standard Pistol è arrivata alla terza generazione, con modifiche e migliorie che non ne hanno alterato l'organizzazione, e neppure di molto cambiato l'aspetto. Unica vera trasformazione è quella del modello 22/45, studiato per le esigenze addestrative dell'Esercito degli Stati Uniti, e che quindi riproduce nell'impugnatura le proporzioni della Col M1911A1.

It was 1949, when readers of the American Rifleman, noting a new handgun advertisement, wondered whether the influential magazine had committed a typographical error: at first glance, the silhouette was that of a Luger, but it was .22 presented as a totally new, and created by a new company: Sturm, Ruger&Co. Inc., of Southport, Connecticut.
The new weapon was truly extraordinary: even taking the latest production techniques, with the frame consisting of two electrically welded printed steel halves, it kept a "vintage" appearance. The bolt ran inside a special tunnel at the top of the frame, making the weapon more compact and stable when shooting, and maintaining firm the sigth.
There is little to say; in 1977 from the factory moved out the one millionth of the Ruger Standard Pistol, and production still continues with success.
The Ruger .22 is one of the most popular guns for shooting and fun in the States, and over the time it was followed by a growing number of weapons both for civilian or law enforcement use, always appreciated for their high quality and innovative solutions. The simplicity and reliability of this pistol designed by Bill Ruger and Alex Sturm has also made it the unofficial companion of many U.S. soldiers, although the small caliber tends to make it a specialist weapon.

Standard Pistol it is currently in its third generation, with modifications and improvements which have not altered the organization, or even much changed the appearance.
Only real change it is the 22/45 model, designed for the needs of the United States army training, and then reproduces in the grip the proportions of the M 1911A1.

La riproduzione ASG - the ASG reproduction

La Ruger Standard Pistol è stata presa ad ispirazione dalla taiwanese KJWorks per produrre una delle sue repliche ASG, la Mark I.
Si sa che per il vecchio barattoliere qui scrivente, niente è irresistibile, fuorché le tentazioni, e così, qualche tempo fa sono tornato a casa con sottobraccio un pacchettino: il modello KJW ed un bel boccione di green gas.

 

La confezione (classica combinazione di container in polistirolo e coperchio in cartone), si limita ad offrire la replica col suo caricatore, un pugnetto di cinopallini, una brugoletta per regolare l'hop up, e un esauriente manuale, che in questo caso vale la pena di studiare con attenzione; vedremo poi il perché.

The Ruger Standard Pistol was taken to inspiration from Taiwanese KJWorks to produce one of its ASG replicas, the Mark I.
We know that for the old plinker who it is writing here, nothing is irresistible, except temptations, and so some time ago I came home with a parcel under my arm: the KJW model and a nice bottle of green gas.
The pack (classic combination of polystyrene containers and cardboard cover), only offers replication with its charger, a handful of ChinaBB, a small Allen key to adjust the hop up, and a comprehensive manual, which in this case it is worth to study carefully (we will see why later).

 

La replica è in ABS con parti in metallo, ma ci vuole fatica a capirlo; la finitura esterna opaca ed il colore nero del materiale, oltre ad uno stampaggio quasi del tutto esente da difetti, sono punti a vantaggio per un acquisto collezionistico.
Tecnicamente, la KJW Mk1 è una riproduzione non scarrellante, dotata di caricatore amovibile per pallini e gas.

The replica is made of ABS with metal parts, but it takes effort to understand it; the opaque finish and the black color of the material, plus a forging almost entirely free from defects, are bonus pints to a collector's purchase.
Technically, the KJW Mk 1 it is a non blowback replica, having a movable BB and gas magazine.

 

 

Aggiungo qualcosa d'altro: questo modello è formato da quattro componenti principali (copricanna, alloggiamento dell'otturatore, otturatore e castello inferiore), ognuna stampata monoliticamente, offrendo una resistenza ed un realismo superiori.
Di converso, la giunzione dei gusci di stampaggio è evidente, anche se non eccessiva, e i marchi sono assenti, o di fantasia.
A questo punto devo confessare una cosa: anche se conoscevo l'esistenza delle pistole .22 per tiro prodotte dalla Ruger, ne ignoravo le caratteristiche. Una breve ricerca per documentarmi, ed ecco che individuo quella riprodotta dalla KJW per la Standard Pistol Mk 552, versione a canna pesante e cilindrica della Mk II.
Il sito della casa statunitense offre anche il manuale scaricabile, ed ecco la sorpresa: questa replica è veramente tale, non solo nella forma esterna, ma anche nell'organizzazione meccanica e nello smontaggio, mantenuti quanto più simili all'originale. Unica pecca, questa riproduzione non è scarrellante.

I will add something else: this model it consists of four main components (barrel cover, bolt housing, bolt and frame), each monolithical, so offering superior strength and realism.
Conversely, the junction of the shell molding is evident, though not excessive, and logos are absent, or fantasy made.
At this point I must confess one thing: even if I knew the existence of the .22 pistols for shooting sports produced by Ruger, I did not know their features. A quick search for documents, and I have found that model reproduced by KJW being the Standard Pistol Mk 552, heavy and cylindrical barrel version of the Mk II.
The site of the U.S. factory also offers a downloadable manual, and here's the surprise: this replica is really that, not only in its external form, but also due to the organization and mechanical disassembly, maintained as close to the original. The only flaw, this reproduction is not blowback.

 

Le mire sono applicate al corpo della replica. Anteriormente, c'è un mirino tipo Partridge sagomato in modo da impedire riflessi che disturbino la mira; posteriormente, una tacca per cui è possibile correggere l'alzo ed il brandeggio con viti a passo continuo.
Le mire sono ben proporzionate, e si acquisiscono con facilità.

The sights, applied to the ASG body, are well proportioned, and could be acquired with ease.
On front, there is a Partridge type sigth, shaped so as to prevent reflections that disturb the aims; rear sigths are adjustable using constant pitch screws for elevation and windage.

 

La canna cilindrica (fissata da una vite a boccola all'alloggiamento dell'otturatore) ha alla bocca un elemento sagomato in plastica rossa; poiché completa la sagoma della replica, l'ho mantenuto, non trovandolo neppure eccessivamente spiacevole.

The cylindrical barrel (fixed by a bushing screw to the bolt housing) has on the muzzle a red plastic shaped element; as it seems complete outline of the model, I have maintained it, not even finding it too uncomfortable.

 

 

Le guancette sono realizzate in materiale plastico zigrinato, e seguono il design del secondo modello, con uno stemma (il monogramma KJW) su quella di destra.
Una curiosità: il colore nero fu voluto da Bill Ruger per ricordare la prematura morte del socio Alex Sturm.

The grips are made in a milled plastic, and follows the design of the second model, with a crest (the KJW logo) on the right.
A curiosity: the black grips of the real gun it was wanted by Bill Ruger to commemorate the untimely death of his partner Alex Sturm.

 

 

La sicura è fedele all'originale, e si trova sul fianco sinistro del castello; azionata, blocca la leva che unisce il grilletto al cane.

Il caricatore è in robusta lamiera saldata, capace di 17 pallini, e serve anche da serbatoio di gas. Nelle mie prove in genere il gas è bastato per un paio di serie.
La valvola di riempimento del gas è situata sul fondo del caricatore, e quella di sfogo, con il suo attuatore, alla sommità.

The magazine is made of strong welded steel shhet, being capable of 17 shots, and also serves as the gas tank. In my tests the gas is usually enough for a couple of BB loads.
The gas fill valve is located on the bottom of the magazine, and the output valve at the top.

 

I pallini trovavo posto in un serbatoio monofilare, con elevatore scorrevole. Il caricamento non è fra i peggiori, ma richiede calma e una certa manualità. Una volta sistemati, i pallini sono stabili, e non mi è mai accaduto di vederli all'improvviso esplodere. Nel tiro, il funzionamento è impeccabile.

The BB are stored in a single stack housing, with sliding elevator. The loading is not among the worst, but it requires some dexterity and calm. Once settled, the BB are stable, and I never happened to see them suddenly explode.
In shooting, the replica operation is flawless.

 

Il fermo del caricatore è a leva, e posto alla base dell'impugnatura: una scelta stilistica conforme al design generale dell'arma originale, che comunque è estremamente efficace, impedendo lo sgancio del caricatore stesso a causa di una pressione sbagliata delle dita che impugnano.

The magazine latch it is at the base of the handle: a stylistic choice in accordance with the original overall design of the weapon, which is still highly effective, preventing the release of the magazine due to a wrong finger pressure. The latch however can knock the outlet valve during insertion or extraction of the magazine.

 

Come ho detto, la replica riprende l'organizzazione dell'originale, e si scompone allo stesso modo.
Sconsiglio comunque di effettuarne la scomposizione senza necessità.

As I said, the replica reproduces the original organization, and could be field stripped in the same way. I suggest not to disassembly it without a real needs for.

 

Nel blocco inferiore del castello sono fissati con perni passanti il grilletto, il cane interno, la catena di scatto e la sicura.

In the frame are fixed with pins the trigger, the internal hammer, the shooting chain and the safe lever.

 

La canna è in ottone; misurandone il diametro interno, ho riscontrato dei valori "bassi", fra 6,1 e 6,3 millimetri. La lunghezza è di 12,5 millimetri, estesi a 13,6 col gruppo hop up, regolabile mediante una vite a boccola per cui è fornita una apposita chiave a brugola.

The barrel it is realized in brass; measuring the internal diameter, I found "low" values, between 6.1 and 6.3 mm. The length is 12.5 mm, reaching 13.6 mm if including the hop up, trimmed by a screw socket for which it is provided an Allen wrench.

 

A questo punto, penso sia il caso di descrivere il funzionamento di questo modello, con meccanismo a doppia azione.
Inserito il caricatore rifornito di gas e pallini, e tolta la sicura, traendo il grilletto si azionano contemporaneamente due dispositivi.
Il primo inizia a ruotare il cane, caricando la molla alloggiata nella parte posteriore dell'impugnatura.
Il secondo, tramite un elemento a forchetta, provoca l'arretramento della canna (che ha un grado di libertà, a detrimento della precisione) per qualcosa come tredici millimetri, sino a che la sua estremità superiore non si unisce ermeticamente al caricatore.

At this point, I think it is appropriate to describe the operation of this model, with double action mechanism.
Inserted a magazine filled with gas and bullets, and turned off the safe, taking the trigger you operate two devices simultaneously.

This pre-travel of the trigger is fairly manageable, but the subsequent rear movement of three millimeters it means a significant resistance to overcome, and leads to shooting by instinct rather than accurately aiming.
Ensuing tears, and, after a series of coups, a troublesome irritation of the finger, caused perhaps also by the knurling on the trigger.

 

La canna rimane arretrata sino a che non viene rilasciato il grilletto, e deve avanzare completamente per consentire di camerare il successivo pallino.

The barrel remains retracted until the trigger it is released, and must move completely forward to allow room for the next BB.

 

Mi sono chiesto quanto potesse influire il movimento della canna sulla precisione.
Con potenza di poco superiore allo joule, ossia ai 100 metri secondo, e con un semplice esercizio matematico, il pallino fuoriesce dalla canna dopo tre millesimi di secondo dall'inizio della propulsione.
L'imprecisione nel tiro è causata quindi dallo sforzo applicato sul grilletto, che alcune fonti indicano in circa 7 chili!

Infine, la prova pratica: per ragioni termiche ho impiegato il mio personalissimo poligono ridotto domiciliare, che mi offre poco meno di cinque metri, e dei bersagli corrispondentemente ridotti al diametro di 4,5 centimetri.

Ecco i due bersagli, in appoggio (rosso) ed a mano libera (verde); a parte un paio di colpi persi per strappi, la precisione è buona, e potrebbe essere anche superiore, se solo lo scatto fosse stato realizzato in modo diverso, magari affidando all'otturatore il compito di armare il cane e far retrocedere la canna....
C'è da dire che non sono, anche a queste distanze ridotte, un gran tiratore... la miopia mi frega!

I wondered how could the barrel movement affect the precision.
Being the power slightly higher than a joule, ie 100 meters in a second, and with a simple mathematical exercise, the bullet exits the barrel after three milliseconds from the beginning of propulsion.
The imprecision in the shot is then caused by stress applied on the trigger, some sources indicate that about 7 kilograms!

Finally, the practical test: for thermal reasons I used my personal home reduced polygon, which gives me less than five meters, and targets correspondingly reduced to a diameter of 4.5 cm.

Here are two targets shooted with support (red) and freehand (green); except for a couple of tears lost shots, accuracy is good, and could be even higher if only the triggering had been achieved in different ways, perhaps entrusting the task of cocking the hammer and moving the barrel to a movable bolt....
I must say that I am not even on these small distances, a great shooter ... myopia f..k me!

Comunque, ecco le mie impressioni finali.

Come replica da collezione, non dovrebbe mancare in nessuna panoplia.
Questo modello è bello, ben fatto, tecnologicamente studiatissimo, e l'unico ritocco che le ho apportato è costituito dal foglio d'alluminio adesivo applicato al simulacro di otturatore.

Per barattolare è divertente, ma dopo un paio di serie ci si stanca, e la precisione se ne va a ramengo.

La potenza troppo elevata, infine, la rende inutilizzabile per il gioco del softair.
The power too high, then, makes it unusable for playing softair game.
Posso solo sperare che KJW, società in possesso del know how necessario,e che recentemente ha prodotto un bel numero di ottimi modelli, riesca a produrne una versione migliorata blowback, un po' meno potente e più docile al tiro.

Anyway, here are my final impressions.

As a collectors model, it should not be missing from any panoply.
This model is beautiful, well made, technologically carefully studied, and the only editing that I made is the aluminum adhesive foil applied to the mock bolt.

For plinking it is a funny toy, but after a couple of magazines you get tired, and the accuracy goes to hell.

I can only hope that KJW, a company that have the necessary know-how, and who recently produced a good number of excellent models, it will be able to produce an improved blowback version, a bit less powerful and more docile to the shooting.
