Blizzard - Emergency Jacket (Mk II)
Oggi sono sempre più numerose le competizioni nel mondo del Softair che si prefissano uno svolgimento “ogni-tempo” e con durate che raggiungono talvolta i due giorni di reale permanenza sul campo.
Questo impone una particolare attenzione riguardo i materiali da impiegare e gli eventuali strumenti di soccorso.
E’ proprio in riferimento a queste gare, al limite del “survival”, che abbiamo deciso di testare l’ EMERGENCY JACKET (Mk II) della britannica Blizzard Protection Systems.
Today are very common the airsoft competition "all-weather" and with a duration of more than two days on field.
This impose a particular attention in the selection of the equipments and emergency tools.
Due this kind of games, borderline with "survival", we have decided to test the EMERGENCY JACKET (Mk II) by the english Blizzard Protection Systems.
Il significato di questo prodotto è quello di avere, sempre pronto all’uso e in uno spazio irrisorio, uno scudo contro pioggia, vento e freddo, in quelle situazioni in cui il fattore urgenza la fà da padrone e ci impone l’uso di materiali testati, tecnici e affidabili.
Il Jacket è costituito da 3 strati di materiali tecnologicamente innovativi:
-uno strato esterno: completamente impermeabile e con funzionamento garantito anche dopo completa immersione nell’acqua (in colorazione Olive Drab nel prodotto fornitoci);
-uno strato medio: microforato, in grado di allontanare l’eventuale condensa creatasi all’interno della giacca a seguito dell' escursione termica.
-uno strato interno: argentato, studiato per riflettere il calore corporeo (lo stesso principio utilizzato sulle coperte isotermiche da soccorso);
Tra gli strati sono presenti delle celle vuote con la funzione di creare uno strato d’aria calda, isolante il corpo dall’esterno.
The meaning of this gear is to have an always ready to use shield against rain, wind and cold for all the situation of emergency where you need to use technical and reliable equipments.
The jacket is made in 3 layers of innovative and technological materials:
-an external layer: totally waterproof even after a complete immersion in water (in Olive Drab in this case)
-a middle layer: micro perfored that send away the condensation in the internal due the temperature range.
-an internal layer: silvered, studied to reflect the body warm (the same work of the emergency isotermic blanket).
Between the layers there are empty cells with the function of create a hot air layer, that insulate the body from the external.
Il prodotto
Il prodotto si presenta come un pacchetto squadrato di dimensioni (H x L x P) 15cm x 11cm x 3-3,5cm, con un peso di 250gr. e di consistenza molto dura trattandosi di un pacchetto sottovuoto.
L’idea dell’impacchettamento sottovuoto risulta realmente efficace: il pacchetto trova comodamente posto in una comune utility verticale o in uno scomparto laterale di uno zaino tattico.
La taglia è unica (altezza 1,1m).
The product
The product comes in a squared box with dimensions (H x L x P) 15cm x 11cm x 3-3,5cm , with a weight of 250gr., very sturdy due the vacuum.
The vacuum idea is very useful: you can store the packet in a common vertical utility pouch or in a lateral pouch of a tactical backpack.
One size fits all (1,1m. height).
L’involucro più esterno (di materiale plastico molto resistente, completamente sigillante) non è sottovuoto e fascia strenuamente il contenuto sottostante con una funzione protettiva.
Il metodo di apertura è facile ed intuitivo, grazie ad una linguetta pre-tagliata (indicata da un red-mark) fuori dalla linea di saldatura a caldo, che ne permette l’apertuta senza utensili o lame.
The external shell (very sturdy plastic made of) has not vacuum and has a protective action.
To open the shell is very easy: you have only to tear the pre-cutted line, marked with a red mark. You don't need to use a knife or other to do that.
Eliminato il primo involucro, se ne scopre un secondo che garantisce il sottovuoto e quindi la forma del pacchetto.
Le dimensioni sono realmente contenute se si tiene presente in suo reale contenuto.
Pulled out the first shell, there's a second one with vacuum.
The dimensions are very small if you consider the contents.

La giacca si apre “a libro” e deve essere spacchettata fino alla completa distensione.
You can open the jacket as a book and you have to unwrap it until the complete stretch
A questo punto la giacca deve essere srotolata nel verso opposto sino ad ottenere la situazione rappresentata nella foto sottostante:

Va ora aperta la struttura tubolare e le maniche vanno srotolate.
Questa procedura dovrebbe essere fatta con le spalle contro vento in modo che questo possa aiutare la distensione della giacca, gonfiandola come una vela.
Anche le maniche sono completamente impermeabili ma in materiale molto più sottile e delicato dell resto della giacca, per questo reputiamo che la loro integrità in ambiente operativo sia molto in dubbio e quindi anche la loro impermeabilità.
Il polsino della maniche, inoltre, risulta libero e senza nessun mezzo di regolazione. Questo particolare, in caso di vento, potrebbe abbassare non poco la capacità termica della giacca, rifornendo di aria fredda lo spazio compreso tra la giacca e il corpo.
Now you have to open the tubular structure and unroll the sleeves.
You have to do that against wind direction so it can help you to stretch the jacket, blowing it like a sail.
The sleeves are totally waterproof but the material they are made of is a lot more thin and delicate than the jacket body, so we have some dubts about their integrity in real field use and, for this reason, about the waterproof.
Besides, the cuffs are open, wothout any retention system. This particular, if you use it with strong wind, could reduce a lot the termic resistance of the jacket, suppling cold air into the space between jacket and body.
Il cappuccio è composto da un’apertura creata sulla “cucitura” (termosaldatura) anteriore, che può essere regolata tramite chiusure a velcro non continuo, particolare questo che potrebbe permettere l’entrata di acqua e vento, tenendo conto del suo possibile utilizzo in condizioni di reale emergenza metereologica.
La regolazione dell’apertura anteriore del cappuccio può variare l’esposizione del viso e la quantità d’aria di ricircolo interno oppure, chiusa completamente, può formare una mini-tenda.
Il sito internet della casa, infatti, segnala la possibilità di potersi coprire quasi completamente con il Jacket, una volta inginocchiati, per potersi riparare in particolari situazioni, per consultare cartine, per consumare un pasto veloce ecc.
The hood is made by a slit created on the front seam (heat sealing) you can adjust through non continuous hook-and-loop through that could pass rain and wind, thinking that you will use this jacket in real weather emergency situations.
Adjusting the front slit you can adjust the face exposure and the internal air recycling or you can completely close it to use as a tent.
On the Blizzard website is showed you can use it to complete cover yourself with this jacket going on your knees and in this position you can eat, use a map and more.
Tutti i bordi, le parti termosaldate e gli angoli sono protetti da una copertura di nastro telato nero.
All the border, the heat sealings and the corners are protected by a black duct tape.
La vita della giacca è regolabile per mezzo di un elastico.
Il sistema di ritenzione dell’elastico è veramente ben congeniato: l’elastico sparisce ricoperto dalla struttura impermeabile.
Il sistema di chiusura a clip scorrevole su paracord è stato eliminato a favore dell’elastico per economizzare al massimo gli ingombri ed eliminare i materiali rigidi (completamente assenti nel prodotto) che potrebbero danneggiare la struttura quando impacchettata sottovuoto.
You can adjust the jacket waist through an elastic.
The elastic retention system is very well done: the elastic retention disappears covered by the waterproof structure.
The moving plastic clip retention system has been eliminated and replaced with the elastic retention to economize the dimensions and to eliminate hard materials (you can't find in this gear) that could damage the structure when in vaccum.
L’interno, come già accennato, è composto da materiale termoriflettente ReflexCell™ in grado di riflettere il calore del corpo.
The inner, as we said, is made of termoreflective material ReflexCell™ who can replect the body warm.
CONCLUSIONI:
Non si tratta di un capo di comune impiego giornaliero, ma di un presidio da utilizzare in caso di emergenza.
Il Jacket Mk II è indirizzato verso le esigenze degli operatori del SAR (Search and Rescue), operatori dell’emergenza in montagna o ambienti freddi e tecnici del soccorso alpino ma può trovare posto (di diritto) nello zaino di escursionisti, alpinisti, cacciatori, giocatori di SoftAir, sciatori ecc.
Le dimensioni e il peso contenuti ne fanno uno strumento versatile e comodo da trasportare.
La sua utilità è indubbia: risulta infatti impermeabile al 100% anche dopo ore di pioggia ed è in grado di “produrre” calore semplicemente riflettendo il calore corporeo e riducendone la dispersione.
In situazioni estreme (per le quali è stato concepito) è quindi in grado di fornire un’ottima protezione da pioggia e vento e una fonte di calore inesauribile, in grado quindi di prevenire o proteggere dall’ipotermia (entro certi limiti, ovviamente).
Le celle d’aria comprese tra gli strati, che vanno “strechate” e fatte “gonfiare” d’aria prima di indossare il jacket, isolano il corpo dall’esterno e permettono il mantenimento del calore donando una sensazione immediata di calore e di “consistenza” del jacket stesso.
Le rifiniture sono ineccepibili ma reputiamo che alcuni particolari potrebbero essere migliorati.
Punto debole del jacket risultano infatti le maniche, non in linea con le caratteristiche della giacca.
Come già preannunciato, la loro “delicatezza” e l’assenza di regolazioni ai polsi fanno sorgere non pochi dubbi sulla resa in ambito reale.
Riteniamo che un valido palliativo a questo problema potrebbe essere l’annodare entrambe le maniche, cosa che costringerebbe a tenere le braccia all’interno della struttura annullando così la funzionalità operativa (ma innalzando quella di “wind-stopper”).
Esistono in commercio numerose varianti destinate al mondo “civile”, quindi: outdoor, escursionismo, caccia ecc. in differenti colori ad alta visibilità (arancione, argento), diverse consistenze e diverse forme (dal jacket senza maniche al sacco per dormire).
Dopo l’utilizzo è consigliato riporre la giacca ad asciugare in ambiente asciutto e poi rimpacchettare in un contenitore adeguato, quale per es. una utility pouch.
In alternativa si può provvedere autonomamente alla sistemazione sottovuoto ex-novo oppure attraverso la stessa ditta che offre il servizio di re-packing.
“Purtroppo” il clima mite della zona delle prove non ha permesso di testare a fondo questo strumento.
Ci siamo quindi limitati a testarlo in una breve escursione notturna a circa 2°C, volutamente senza abbigliamento tecnico (t-shirt + felpa in cotone + Emergency Jacket), in assenza di vento, per un percorso di circa 4km (2salita+2discesa).
Il calore “prodotto” in movimento da questo jacket è veramente notevole, tanto da far sentire superflua la felpa indossata.
La sensazione d’ingombro del jacket indossato non è eccessiva e permette la marcia e le operazioni essenziali.
La consistenza è tutt’altra rispetto a quella delle coperte termiche a cui sono abituati i tecnici del soccorso, neanche paragonabili con questo strumento.
Altro discorso merita l'utilizzo di questo Jacket su persone già colpite da ipotermia e/o incoscienti in quanto risulterebbe molto complicato farlo indossare, soprattutto con condizioni meteo sfavorevoli.
Il prodotto ci è stato fornito da The Crew OnLine e il suo costo è di 39€ spedito, quindi un costo del tutto abbordabile (considerato il costo di £25 più spese di spedizione, indicato sul sito della Blizzard).
CONCLUSIONS
This is not a common dress for daily use but an emergency gear
The MK II is designed for SAR operatos (Search&Rescue), technical mountain or cold zone rescuers but it can find an useful place in a backpack of an hiker, mountaineer, hunter, airst player, skier and more.
The weight and dimensions are very small so you can easily carry it.
It's very useful: it's completely waterproof even after hours under the rain and it can "made" warm reflecting the body warm and reducing the dissipation of it.
In extreme situations (for which it has been created) it can supply a good protection against rain and wind and it can supply warm to prevent or protect against hypothermia (within limits, obviously).
You have to stretch and "blow" the air cells between the layers before wear the jacket so they can insulate the body from the external zone and hold the warm giving an immediate sensation of warm and "consistency" on you.
The finishes are very well done but we think some particulars could be improved.
The weak point of the MK II are surely the sleeved, not in standard with the rest of the jacket.
As we said, the sleeves are too soft and delicate and have not a retention system: it makes some dubts about their behaviour in a real military use.
We think that you can partially resolve this problem knoting the sleeves: in this way you will have to put your arms into the body structure of the jacket canceling the operative use of the sleeves (but increasing the wind-stopper action).
Many kinds of this jacket are available for the "civil use", so for the outdoor, hiking, hunting and more and they're in different high visibility colours (like orange or silver), have different consistencies and shapes (from the jacket without sleeves to the sleep sack).
After the use it's suggested to dry the jacket is a dry zone and put in a utility pouch in example.
If you want you can re-vacuum the jacket or send it to the Blizzard and ask for re-vacuum service.
The good wheater where I life didn't allows me to test in depth the jacket.
We tested it in short night hiking at 2°C without mountain clothes (only a t-shirt + sweatshirt and Emergency Jacket), without wind, for about 4km (2 ascent + 2 descent).
The jacket made a lot of warm so, at those condition, the sweatshirt was superfluous.
The encumbrance feeling is not too much and it allows to walk and the easy actions.
The consistency is different than the emergency isotermic blanket: the jacket is a lot more sturdy.
Another story is to use this jacket on people just in hypothermia and/or unconscious because it coulb be very hard to make them wear it, expecially in bad wheater conditions.
