I’d been using the same Performance Bike brand pump for years, and although it works with both Shrader and Presta Valves, it requires opening the head and reversing several pieces, that always takes me several minutes and is incredibly frustrating. This pump caught my attention because you don’t have to do anything to the head to make it work with either valve style. Because I have such a variety of bikes and tractors that use either type of valve, this is such an improvement. However, I will say that the head is quite bulkier than my old model and as a result won’t fit well between the spokes of my motor bike. One thing I really appreciate is how tall this is. In the retracted position the pump is around 25-inches from the base to the top of the handle, and it extends up to a whopping 42.5-inches. So, this is made for an adult to use, and you don’t have to bend over or stoop to use it. The hose is also 28-inches long, so it is easy to get the reach to the valve stem, and I like how there are several clips on the housing to keep the hose on the shaft for storage.I tested it on my Presta valve bicycle and my Shrader Valve lawn tractor, and it worked very easily and because of the tall 18-inch strokes, it was a quick fill of each. I like this pump so much better than my old one.Despite my praises for this pump, I do have a couple of nitpicks about it:- I found that you shouldn’t really press the head onto the valve stem with much force or the pump won’t fill.- The gauge is low on the shaft and although the numbers are easy to read, the tick marks are fairly small. I also don’t like that the tick marks are in 5-psi increments. It makes it difficult to get a precise reading, and the large numbers are in 20-psi increments.- The gauge is not as accurate as my older pump, it is off by about 3-5 psi.- The folding base seems to be a weak link and could break if not handled correctly.Despite my nitpicks, for just under thirty dollars at the time of this writing, I think this is a great value and one of the better units out there. Because it doesn’t have a folding handle, it is less prone to breakage, and the aluminum shaft just adds to the durability. I also find value in how tall this is, how long the tube is, and the thicker diameter of the tubing on this than what is all too common to other budget pumps.
